Venmo Wallet Payment Now Possible with Drupal Commerce
Centarro has announced the integration of Venmo Wallet Payment in 'Commerce Paypal,' the company's oldest and most popular payment integration module. Centarro is the company behind 'Commerce Kickstart,' a custom Drupal distribution that helps build Drupal Commerce implementations. The Commerce Paypal module is installed by default with the said distribution.
The significance of this integration is that eCommerce websites based out of the USA can now use the full potential of Paypal's payment services. It was a longstanding request for merchants using Drupal Commerce in physical retail environments to be able to accept payment via Venmo.
Venmo is one of the largest digital wallet services in the US (owned by PayPal as of 2013). Its capabilities as a mobile app prevented its use for retail transactions until last year. But the post-pandemic leap in mobile-based technology solutions was a game changer. Toward the end of 2021, PayPal added Venmo support to their Smart Payment Buttons API.
Commerce Paypal module was one of the first to integrate PayPal Checkout and the Smart Payment Buttons API in open source. Through it, Centarro maintains integrations for merchants on older APIs, including Express Checkout, Payflow, and Payflow Link.
Paypal adding Venmo support to their Smart Payment Buttons API enabled Centarro to integrate it with the Commerce Paypal module. With Commerce PayPal 8.x-1.1 or later, merchants can enable the Venmo button on their checkout forms so customers can shop on their phones and use the Venmo app to pay. Paired with a mobile responsive theme like Kickstart's Belgrade, this makes Drupal Commerce even more capable for mobile transactions.
The PayPal Checkout integration identifies the funding source for any payment in its order's data array. To surface this data so the merchant and customers can see which PayPal service was used to pay for an order, Centarro has made an order.funding_source variable available for use in the eCommerce site's Twig templates.
