JOB DESCRIPTION

The University of Nevada, Las Vegas invites applications for Web Developer, UNLV University Libraries.

Role of the Position:

Reporting to the Head, Web and Application Development Services, the Web Developer is responsible for supporting the technical development and maintenance of the UNLV Libraries’ websites and integrated applications.

The incumbent works collaboratively with colleagues on original coding, application integrations, and the technical development and enhancement of the Libraries’ website, including databases, content management system components, and digital data repositories.  This work requires a mix of technical skills, including developing, maintaining, and documenting PHP/MySQL applications in a Unix/Linux environment.

Responsibilities:

  • Design, develop, and implement applications and new functionality associated with the Libraries’ public websites, including original programming and scripting. 
  • Develop back-end components and modules supporting the Libraries’ website content management system (currently Drupal 9)
  • Integrates other locally developed and/or commercial applications for seamless use in conjunction with the Libraries’ website and the web-accessible services it offers.
  • Develops standalone databases / applications fulfilling an expressed need serving the patron or library staff environments
  • Codes and creates original webpages and websites from various planning documents and directives.
  • Maintain and provide functionality updates to existing applications
  • Maintain awareness of evolving technical developments, best practices in the web and application development fields and commercial vendor product developments and enhancements.

Minimum Qualifications:

This position requires a Bachelor’s Degree from a regionally accredited college or university and 1-3 years of related experience. Credentials must be obtained prior to the start of employment.

Required:

  • Competence and sensitivity in working with individuals who are highly diverse regarding many facets of identity, including but not limited to gender, ethnicity, nationality, sexual orientation, ability, income, level of educational attainment, and religion.
  • Knowledge of and ability to document code and web projects clearly and concisely following best practices, within code files and in additional external documentation
  • Understanding of security best practices associated with web infrastructure in order to minimize security risks, and to maximize application performance.
  • Awareness of evolving technical developments and best practices in the web and application development fields, and associated development communities
  • Programming skills and support experience with web-related technologies (e.g. PHP; CSS; JavaScript and JavaScript libraries including jQuery; HTML)
  • Programming skills and support experience with designing, implementing, modifying, and maintaining relational databases (e.g. MySQL)
  • Experience with Web API / REST guidelines and services, including JSON
  • Ability to communicate well with other coworkers to produce given deliverables, as well as with clients in understanding and delivering web and digital products according to evolving needs, desires, and specifications 
     

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with the current release of Drupal, including familiarity with theme layer and site building with modules such as Views, Paragraphs, Panels, and Layout Builder, using best practices and coding standards
  • Experience writing and maintaining custom modules for the current release of Drupal, using best practices and coding standards
  • Programming skills and support experience with PERL, XML/XSLT, and Ruby.
