Importance of Data Backup This World Backup Day!

Joshua Sortino

Digital innovations are just being added by the hour it seems in this present age. Adding to that we hear of cyber attacks and system failures even while we try and catch up to the digital transformations that are happening nowadays. Taking back up and entering into a discipline of taking data back up as a routine cannot be better emphasized on this world backup day.

What is World Backup Day?

World Backup Day which falls on March 31st every year reminds us of the need to keep data safe and secure by taking backups. Like all special emphasis days, it is not a once-a-year thing. Just as Women’s day is not the only day you treat your women well, the same way World Back up day reminds us of its importance and not something to be shelved and not delved into other days of the year.

Need for Data Backup

According to the European IT Governance website, there has been an 11% increase in such incidents in 2021 compared to 2020.1

Below is a look at the statistics of data loss based on the industry.

Every single industry is affected. Even with the progress in the digital webspace, the need for good data governance becomes supreme. And even worse, 43% of the data breaches is reported to be against SMEs who can ill afford such issues.

Having said that, data loss due to Cybersecurity attack is only 3% compared to other common reasons for data loss. Other reasons include hardware failure, human error, software corruption etc.

While it is better to be safe and go that extra mile to protect ourselves, how do we do that? One key element in the prevention plan is to do regular data backups to make data recovery in the case of a loss easier. Backups make problem-solving easy even in the most imaginable worst case scenarios.

Data Loss Prevention (DLP)

There are four points to focus on for data loss prevention: Network, endpoint, storage and cloud. While all four provide the same result of data protection, each method of protection is different.

While the scope of this article does not cover the various DLP methods, it emphasizes the need for data loss prevention through backups- whatever the method.

In the case of Free and Open Source Content Management Systems like Drupal or WordPress there are automatic backup methods possible through modules or plugins. Drupal has a module called the Backup and Migrate module that makes it easy for site administrators and developers to back up of the site before migration or even as a precautionary step.

The Backup and Migrate Drupal Module

The Backup and Migrate Drupal module3 allows you to back up and restore your Drupal MySQL database, code, files or migrate your website between environments. It supports gzip, bzip and zip compression as well as automatic scheduled backups.

No one organization sets up its digital assets for failure. But to ensure all bases are covered, we need to not just have a backup but also have a strategy for disaster recovery in the event a mishap occurs.
