Simplifying Layout Builder in Web Development with Igor Lakic

Mosaic Websites has published an article, 'Layout Builder Nirvana'1 in which, Igor Lakic shares insights on simplifying the complexities of the Layout Builder in web development.

The Layout Builder is an excellent content editing tool with significant potential. However, in Drupal, complexities can quickly arise, leading to clients having too much creative freedom, which can adversely affect the initial design and content representation.

The initial idea behind the Layout Builder was to have all the necessary components available throughout a project. It was intended to simplify the use of components and streamline the work for developers, agencies, and clients. However, clients often prefer a more straightforward approach where they can easily add components to the page they are editing without dealing with intricate layout decisions.

Igor explored a different approach to address this challenge, inspired by Atomic Design principles and Pattern Lab themes—this new approach groups components into Atoms, Molecules, Organisms, Templates, and Pages. The benefit of this approach is that components retain their visual styles (Atoms and Molecules) while higher-level components (Organisms and Templates) control the layout of these components. This promotes reusability and adheres to the "Don't Repeat Yourself" (DRY) principle.

In the Drupal context, this approach found a logical companion in the Paragraph module. It allowed for the representation of components and the configuration of available components within wrapper paragraphs. This approach strikes a balance between power and safety for end clients.

For those interested in a more detailed understanding, Igor Lakic shared a video recording for a visual example.
