GovFlix: DrupalCon Singapore 2024 Splash Awards Finalist

The Drupal Community is nearing the commencement of DrupalCon Singapore 2024 and the first-ever Splash Awards Asia. Held across the globe to recognise excellence in Drupal projects, the Splash Awards celebrate the best and brightest websites, digital experiences, and open-source contributions developed with Drupal. This momentous event provides an exclusive platform for agencies, developers, and clients in the region to showcase their creative and technical achievements on an international stage.

A few days back the finalists of the first Splash Awards Asia were announced and The DropTimes team sprung to action. We religiously reached out to all 15 of the finalists under various categories and received generous responses. We are beginning our "Splash Awards Finalists Series" series with the inputs from Morpht. GovFlix by Morpht has been recognised as a finalist in the DrupalCon Singapore 2024 Splash Awards in the Education category. At Morpht, we’re driven by a passion for innovation and creating smarter, more engaging user experiences. Our latest proof-of-concept project, GovFlix, showcases how content recommendations can enhance user engagement by delivering targeted content based on browsing behaviour.

Personalisation on GovCMS SaaS

GovFlix was built on a Drupal CMS using the GovCMS SaaS platform, demonstrating that advanced content recommendation systems and personalisation features can be implemented for Australian Government websites.

This project envisions a future where content publishing is tailored to individual users. The GovFlix interface adapts to provide each user with a personalised experience, presenting content most relevant to their interests. Content can be adapted based on scenarios that can utilise content affinity, relevancy, recency, popularity and the user’s history.

Reimagining Content Display

Traditional content listings, often sorted by date, have been transformed in GovFlix. Instead of standard Views, content blocks are generated by a recommendation engine, offering personalised content suggestions. This method is ideal for sites where users have specific intents and benefit from discovering related content seamlessly.

The Technology Behind GovFlix

The site leverages a number of open-source components along with a recommendation engine.

Recombee Integration

GovFlix uses Recombee, a powerful recommendation service, to manage personalised content delivery. The process involved:
●    Defining a custom schema for the Recombee index.
●    Feeding data from Drupal into Recombee.
●    Configuring multiple recommendation scenarios.
●    Recombee’s JSON endpoint delivers dynamic recommendations, which are then transformed client-side in

Drupal to display personalised content for users.

Morpht has developed the Search API Recombee and Recombee modules in the past. These modules provide a convenient way to integrate Recombee into Drupal. In the case of GovFlix, we have adapted the modules to work in the theme layer of GovCMS SaSS, which doesn’t allow for the addition of any new modules.

Convivial Profiler

To further enhance the browsing experience, Convivial Profiler was integrated. This personalisation engine helps guide users through tailored journeys by presenting relevant suggestions and messaging based on their intent at key moments.

GovCMS and CivicTheme

GovCMS leverages two open source projects for the site build. GovCMS SaaS is a Drupal distribution developed by the Australian Government. CivicTheme is a Drupal theme which has made components suitable for government and is increasingly common in Australia.
