Migrating from Drupal 7 to Drupal 10: A Long-Awaited Upgrade

Strategic advantages of migrating from Drupal 7 to Drupal 10

James Oakley, in a recent post writes about how he finally migrated his website from Drupal 7 to Drupal 10, marking a major update after years of planning. Drupal 7, released in 2011, allowed straightforward upgrades from previous versions. However, Drupal 8, launched in 2015, was a complete rewrite, making direct upgrades more complex.

Rather than transitioning to Drupal 8 earlier, Oakley waited until he was ready. He took the opportunity to restructure the site, optimize Views, rethink content types, and transition from Panels to Layouts. By the time he was ready, Drupal 10 had already been released (December 2022), allowing him to skip intermediate versions.

Oakley chose Drupal 10 over Drupal 11 due to module compatibility issues. Modules like Menu Import and Export and Configuration Override Warn still lack Drupal 11 support. Despite the delays, he appreciates Drupal 10’s modern workflow, improved content editing, better caching, and Twig theming. He plans to share more on theming in a future post.
