Drupal 11.2 Alpha Phase Begins May 7, 2025
The alpha phase for Drupal 11.2 is set to commence the week of May 7, 2025, as part of preparations for the upcoming minor release. Core developers are advised to finalize all changes permitted only in minor releases by this date. The deadline for most core patches targeting the 11.2.0-alpha1 release is May 7.
Ahead of the alpha tagging, the 11.2.x release branch will be created. At that point, alpha experimental modules will be removed from the 11.2.x codebase, with further development continuing exclusively in the 11.x branch. Developers and site owners will be able to begin testing the alpha version once it becomes available.
The 10.6.x branch will also be established as the next maintenance minor release for Drupal 10. Following the release of Drupal 11.2 and 10.5, only security updates will be provided for versions 11.1 and 10.4. Versions 11.0 and 10.3 will reach end-of-life on June 18, 2025. Security coverage for 11.1 and 10.4 will continue through December 10, 2025.
During the alpha phase, core issue commitments will follow the established release policy:
- Issues allowed in patch releases will be committed to 11.2.x and 10.5.x, and may also be included in 11.1.x and 10.4.x until the final bugfix releases for those versions on June 4, 2025.
- Issues permitted only in minor releases will be committed to the 11.x development branch. Select strategic issues may be backported to 11.2.x at the discretion of core committers, provided this occurs before the beta deadline.
- Issues allowed in maintenance minor releases will be committed to 11.x and 10.6.x. A limited number may be backported to 11.2.x and 10.5.x at committer discretion prior to the beta freeze.
The first beta release is anticipated approximately two weeks after the alpha release. All alpha restrictions will apply to the beta phase. The beta release marks the final deadline for new features and API changes. Once the beta commit freeze is in effect, issues in the Reviewed & Tested by the Community (RTBC) queue will be deferred to future minor releases.
The release candidate phase for Drupal 11.2 is expected to begin the week of June 2.
