2025 State of Open Source Report Shows Surge in Adoption, Ongoing Security Concerns
The 2025 State of Open Source Report reveals continued growth in Open Source adoption, with 96% of organizations maintaining or increasing usage over the past year—26% reporting significant increases. Produced by Perforce OpenLogic in partnership with the Eclipse Foundation and the Open Source Initiative (OSI), the report outlines both the momentum and challenges shaping the global Open Source ecosystem.
Cost efficiency remained the top driver for adoption, as organizations turn to Open Source to support investments in cloud, data, and containerized infrastructure. However, concerns are mounting over lifecycle management and skills shortages, particularly in Big Data operations, where nearly half of respondents reported low confidence in their teams’ capabilities.
The report also highlights widespread use of End-of-Life software, with 26% of organizations still running CentOS, raising compliance and security risks.
Security and staffing continue to be critical pain points, emphasizing the need for stronger governance and upskilling initiatives across the Open Source sector.
