Steven Jones Reflects on Drupal Pivot EU Discussions on AI and Agency Strategy
In mid-January 2026, business leaders from across the Drupal ecosystem met in Gent, Belgium, for Drupal Pivot EU, an unconference focused on strategy, sustainability, and artificial intelligence. Steven Jones of ComputerMinds has published a detailed reflection on the sessions and the prevailing mood among agencies.
Artificial intelligence featured prominently in discussions. Participants cited production use cases including PDF-to-HTML conversion, alt text generation, moderation through pattern recognition, compliance-focused translation, and chatbot deployment. AI-assisted coding was discussed with both enthusiasm and caution, particularly around reliability and hallucinations. One recurring theme was that Drupal may function more effectively as a configuration target for AI agents rather than hosting AI systems directly.
Business model sustainability formed another central thread. Smaller agencies reportedly expressed cautious optimism, supported by long-term maintenance contracts, diversified revenue streams, and productised offerings. Larger agencies appeared more concerned, particularly where revenue depends on large bespoke projects delivered on a time-and-materials basis.
A session titled “Drupal Inside” proposed defining a higher standard for Drupal-based products, potentially signalling responsible AI use, regulatory compliance, and certified expertise. The concept centres on marking Drupal-based distributions or products rather than end-user websites. Naming and trademark implications remain unresolved.
The unconference structure allowed participants to collaboratively define sessions. Jones initially questioned the time spent on agenda design but later described it as useful for aligning discussion priorities. His recap also touches on softer themes, including developer mental health in high-velocity AI workflows and the need for leadership within Drupal’s AI landscape.
The account reflects a community navigating transition. While practical AI adoption is underway in defined contexts, long-term economic models for Drupal agencies remain unsettled.
