Canvas 1.11 Replaces Global Regions with Full-Page Templates

Version 1.11 of Drupal Canvas replaces global regions with editable, theme-independent page templates for full-page layouts. Released on 8 September 2026, the version allows Canvas page templates to control the layout around page content without tying that structure to a particular theme. The release also adds document support in components and expands the controls available through Canvas AI.

Page templates are the principal architectural addition in the release. Canvas describes them as editable templates that provide control over the full page layout while remaining independent of the active theme. The change moves Canvas beyond editing content within a theme-defined page shell by bringing the full-page layout into its template model.

Canvas 1.11 also introduces a Document prop type in the code editor for linking components to locally hosted files such as PDFs. External document media can be reconciled through the Canvas CLI and HTTP API. Other editing fixes address drag outlines, media controls, optional fields, form state during navigation, and translation behaviour.

Canvas AI gains a Tools dropdown and can use configured agents and tools instead of relying on hardcoded selections. The release adds agents for page building and general Canvas questions and includes changes intended to provide clearer AI error messages. Underlying work also covers Drupal 11.5 compatibility, component rendering and validation, CLI reliability, and automated test coverage. Canvas 1.11 requires Drupal 11.3 or later.
