It was established to support the right to freedom of opinion and expression, as outlined in Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The organization is made up of individuals committed to uncovering and sharing the truth through advocacy journalism.

Sahara Reporters provides a space for citizen journalists to report on issues such as corruption and government misconduct in Africa. The platform uses various media formats, including text, photos, and videos, to engage and inform the public. It aims to encourage citizens and activists to take action against corruption, environmental degradation, and violations of democratic principles. The website is currently being upgraded to Drupal 9 and Drutopia to enhance its functionality and user experience.
