What's in Store for Drupal 10.1: New Features and Improvements on the Horizon

Third and Grove, a digital agency and Drupal expert, published a blog post on April 10, 2023, penned by Nathaniel Catchpole, titled "What's Next for Drupal 10," which explores the new features and improvements that are coming to the popular open-source content management system.

The momentum hasn't stopped with the recent release of Drupal 10. New features and API improvements are already in the works and landing, ready for Drupal 10.1.x. Among the enhancements are better CSS and Javascript aggregation to improve performance, reduced headaches for writing new code, and community initiatives to squash bugs and fix issues.

One of the new features is the Views Responsive Grid, which allows users to specify the maximum number of columns, minimum grid cell width, and gutter spacing. The grid will automatically reflow to have fewer columns when the grid cells resize below the minimum width or expand to fit as many columns as permitted while keeping the grid width above the minimum value. This feature saves developers and website owners time by enabling them to configure a feature that previously required custom code or contributed modules in just a few minutes.

Another improvement coming to Drupal 10.1 is better CSS and Javascript aggregation. Implementing CSS and Javascript aggregation in Drupal core has been plagued with issues for over a decade. The new implementation will help reduce execution times and stampedes on cold caches.

Drupal 10.1 will also look to move away from annotations and transition towards PHP attributes. While Drupal 10 doesn't yet support attributes, there are hopes to support it soon, as the libraries Drupal relies on for parsing annotations drop support for it.

Furthermore, Drupal's bug smash and needs review queue initiatives are making great progress in triaging Drupal's long backlog of bug reports, moving on stalled issues, and closing old issues. These initiatives pave the way for future improvements, such as the Project Browser and Automatic Updates, which are expected to come to Drupal 10.2 or 10.3.

With these improvements and community initiatives, Drupal 10 is set to continue its position as a leading open-source content management system, making it easier for developers and website owners to create and manage their websites.
