Reasons to Not Delay Migration from Drupal 7

The Drupal Association announced the extension of the end-of-life for Drupal 7 until January 5, 2025, at DrupalCon Pittsburgh. This extension is marked as the final extension with no further exceptions. A recent blog post published by Chapter Three explains why organizations must no longer delay the migration of their Drupal 7 sites. Arlina Espinoza. is the author of the article.

Many websites still rely on Drupal 7, while only a tiny fraction have transitioned to Drupal 9 or 10. The migration from Drupal 7 to newer versions is time-consuming and requires a wholesale rewrite of the codebase. According to the blog post, delaying the migration can lead to reduced support for modules and security vulnerabilities.

Additionally, maintaining a Drupal 7 site means being frozen in time without the ability to incorporate new features or design elements. Therefore, website owners are encouraged to start planning their migration NOW to avoid the potential drawbacks of staying on an obsolete content management system (CMS).

Drupal 10 offers improvements over Drupal 9, including enhancements in media libraries, APIs, PHP version, JavaScript components, and Twig template engine. It also introduces CKEditor 5 as the default WYSIWYG editor and introduces accessibility-focused themes.

Furthermore, Drupal 10 facilitates decoupling with Next-Drupal, making it easier for front-end developers to consume menu data for building navigation systems. Thus, it is in the organization's best interest to migrate to the latest versions. Click here to read the blog post.
