Last Chance: Adopt Drupal 7 Projects Before Unsupported Status

As Drupal continues evolving towards newer versions, the last chance to adopt Drupal 7 contributed projects is fast approaching. Beginning August 01, 2023, contributed modules and themes for Drupal 7 will face the risk of being marked as unsupported, signalling a shift towards the platform's more recent iterations.

The Drupal community, known for its strong support and collaborative spirit, will continue to provide community support for existing contributed modules and themes as it has done so far. However, after August 01, modules and themes within the Drupal 7 branch that receive an unsupported status will no longer be eligible for new maintainership and will not be marked as supported again.

The status change may occur if the current maintainers decide to mark the module or theme as unsupported or if the Drupal Security Team takes such action due to a lack of response from maintainers. For users or organizations relying on Drupal 7 modules and themes, it is vital to take proactive steps to adopt and support these projects before they potentially become unsupported.

Notably, the Drupal Security Team will cease issuing security advisories for any unsupported third-party libraries on which Drupal 7 contributed modules or themes depend. This includes widely-used libraries like CKEditor 4, meaning that sites relying on these modules or themes could become vulnerable to potential security risks.

With this announcement, the Drupal community emphasizes the importance of staying up-to-date with the latest Drupal versions and supported projects. Drupal 7, once a significant milestone for the community, will continue to have community support, but it is gradually making way for newer, more feature-rich versions.
