Joinup Becomes First European Commission Site to Adopt Drupal 10

Joinup, the European Commission's esteemed platform for open, interoperable, and free digital government ICT solutions, has emerged as a trailblazer by becoming the first European Commission site to embrace the power of Drupal 10. The transition to Drupal 10 marks a significant leap forward, showcasing the platform's commitment to innovation and advancement in the digital arena.

Joinup's voyage into Drupal 10 was not merely a technical upgrade; it represented a major undertaking owing to the complexity of the site and its extensive codebase. The upgrade, which was successfully accomplished in July 2023, stands as a testament to Joinup's dedication to staying at the forefront of technology while providing uninterrupted service to its users.

One of the immediate benefits of migrating to Drupal 10 was the substantial reduction in the number of patches required within the codebase. This optimization streamlined the codebase, enhancing its efficiency and cleanliness. However, the journey was not without its challenges. The process of updating the site's dependencies to align with Drupal 10's requirements posed its own set of hurdles. Negotiating the compatibility of various independent packages and addressing specific requirements demanded precision and careful coordination.

Despite these challenges, the dedicated team at Joinup successfully completed the Drupal 10 upgrade. The outcome is twofold: the platform is now more secure and efficient, and maintenance and updates have become smoother. Joinup relies on 88 Drupal-related packages, including the essential "core-recommended" and Drush. In addition, 67 integrated and patched packages were indispensable for their operations.

The migration involved a meticulous process of adding, removing, and updating patches. The team faced intricacies, but the outcome was notable in its efficiency and effectiveness. The relatively lower number of patches and smoother migration process signifies a promising path forward for Drupal upgrades.
