On Drupal's Commitment to Diversity and Inclusion

The Drupal community is a diverse and vibrant group of individuals from various backgrounds. Upholding diversity, equity, and inclusion isn't merely a moral obligation; it's a fundamental necessity for the Drupal project's vitality and triumph. The makeup of the Drupal community should mirror the diversity of those who utilise and collaborate with the software.

Actively promoting dignity and respect for all is expected from all community members. Accountability for one's words and actions and their impact on others is paramount. Recent events that weren't reported widely or even acknowledged in the open within the Drupal community have underscored the significance of this commitment.

There should be no place in the community for instances of derogatory remarks and hate speech. Such behaviour contradicts Drupal's core values of treating each other with dignity and respect.

To better understand the significance of diversity, inclusivity, and equity, The Drop Times reached out to the Drupal community members to gain insight and gather their comments. This endeavour aims to help others comprehend why it is not acceptable to ridicule minorities, whether it is done publicly or privately, and why such actions go against the core values of Drupal.

AmyJune Hineline, an active member of the community, emphasized the significance of Drupal's values,

"One of Drupal's values is to treat each other with dignity and respect, so we expect to see that in our public figures. Leadership is about having a positive influence. When we allow hate speech from anyone, we endanger the psychological safety of our community. A diverse community with varied life experiences is what makes collaboration more impactful. Hatred of any form is unacceptable."

Fei Lauren, the current lead organiser for Drupal Diversity and Inclusion (DDI), a community-driven initiative, shared her perspective on the importance of responding to incidents,

Fei Lauren

"It's important that we do not allow incidents to be demoralizing or to negatively impact our confidence in what we are working together to build. Initiatives like Drupal Diversity & Inclusion exist to help unify and be heard. I am grateful that people from all over the world joined the #diversity-inclusion Slack channel to share information, support each other, and discuss how best to respond."

Avi Schwab had previously highlighted the significance of diversity and inclusivity in an article discussing "Drupal Community Governance, Transparency, and Sustainability."

These comments highlight the critical importance of diversity and inclusivity within the Drupal community. The Drop Times unequivocally stands with diversity and inclusion, firmly opposing any form of hatred within the community.

The community encourages behaviour and decisions that champion diversity, equity, and inclusion while combatting hatred, oppression, and violence. Safety is an integral component of dignity and respect, and we endorse actions that safeguard our community members.

Drupal.org's Code of Conduct is a crucial tool in communicating these expectations and offering support when needed. Principle 8 of the Values & Principles on drupal.org unequivocally states that our community promotes behaviours and decisions that support diversity, equity, and inclusion, aiming to reduce hatred, oppression, and violence.

Furthermore, in this journey towards inclusivity, it's essential to be aware of the Drupal Community Working Group (CWG) and the Conflict Resolution Team (CRT). The CWG plays a pivotal role in upholding Drupal's values and ensuring a welcoming environment. The mission of the Community Working Group is to foster a friendly and welcoming community for the Drupal project and to uphold the Drupal Code of Conduct.

In case of disagreements within the community, the CWG guides community members through the conflict resolution process to defuse tense situations and keep discussions productive. The CRT, on the other hand, provides specialized support and expertise in handling conflicts and issues that may arise.

So, while we celebrate diversity and inclusivity in the Drupal community, it's equally important to have mechanisms like the Community Working Group and the Conflict Resolution Team in place to ensure that these values are not just words but are actively practised in our interactions and decisions.

In conclusion, Drupal's commitment to supporting diversity, equity, and inclusion is not just a moral stance; it is essential for the health and prosperity of the project. Dries Buytaert's aptly stated,

"The Drupal Values and Principles describe the culture and behaviours expected of members of the Drupal community to uphold. These principles inform how technical and non-technical decisions are made, in addition to how contributors and leaders can support both our community and the project."
