SystemSeed Explores the Intersection of LMS and Drupal at DrupalCon Lille 2023
SystemSeed, recently led an insightful discussion at the 2023 European DrupalCon in Lille, highlighting the convergence of learning management systems (LMS) and Drupal. Their session, hosted by SystemSeed engineer Alexey Beloglazov, revolved around the practical application of LMS tools, with a specific focus on ANU LMS, an open-source Drupal distribution they have crafted. Over the past four years, SystemSeed has undertaken projects geared towards NGOs like UNICEF and mental healthcare organizations. One of their noteworthy endeavors, WHO EQUIP, employs ANU LMS to offer competency assessments and training for mental health professionals.
At the heart of this conversation was ANU LMS, a versatile tool enabling the creation of online courses replete with modules and lessons. These lessons encompass a range of content types, including static elements such as text, images, audio, and video, as well as dynamic components like checklists and quizzes. The BoF session underscored the key features that an ideal LMS should embody, from open-source flexibility to regular updates, user-friendly installation, comprehensive content editing, multilingual support, offline access, and easy customization. ANU LMS was conceived to meet the need for an intuitive, feature-rich, and mobile-ready LMS solution and is now a mature module available for download on Drupal.org.
With approximately 15 participants, the BoF session welcomed individuals well-versed in the realm of LMS. Attendees actively shared their insights and experiences, with a particular focus on ANU LMS's current attributes and its roadmap for future developments. While some participants looked forward to functionalities like student monitoring and course recommendations, SystemSeed primarily employs ANU LMS for projects where it serves as a reference hub for professionals seeking specific content. The discussion also shows a light on the challenges posed by steep learning curves and the high costs associated with many LMS tools, prompting consideration of alternatives such as Opingo and Moodle.
