Drupal in Government: Top Indian States That Run Official Websites on Drupal

Drupal is one of the top content management systems (CMS) in government organisations. Several factors make Drupal a favourite for Governments and their machinery. On top is Drupal’s ability to manage higher levels of complexity. The modular and composable nature of Drupal allows the Government machinery to design the websites intended to provide public services in a decentralised manner. Also, the open-source nature of Drupal makes it a transparent endeavour. Government agencies also have a steady backup of development teams required to maintain the efficient running of the open-source software. Moreover, not choosing proprietary software saves the public exchequer from draining money to companies.

Using data from BuiltWith and Wappalyzer, let’s examine the state government websites in India that are running on Drupal.

The Kerala Government’s website is rich in textual content and is genuinely a multi-language website with localisation (l10n) enabled. The website serves content in Malayalam, the state's mother tongue and English, prioritising universal access. It also serves as a people-facing tech hub that allows access to and execution of various government services. Drupal’s ability to support the local language seamlessly is palpable from the smooth flow of the website. Sources say the state government website is slowly shifting its frontend to React.
