Custom Meta Module Integrated into Metatag for Advanced Tag Management

Drupal logo

According to a blog by Naveen Valecha, technical architect at Morpht, the Metatag module in Drupal has been enhanced with the integration of the Custom Meta module as a new submodule, metatag_custom_tags. Originally introduced in 2021, Custom Meta enabled site builders to create and manage custom meta tags without custom coding. By merging with Metatag, the functionality is now streamlined within a single module, offering an improved user interface, better integration, and ongoing community support.

Although there is no direct migration path, site builders using Custom Meta are encouraged to upgrade to Metatag 2.1.0, manually re-create their tags using the new submodule, and uninstall the Custom Meta module, which will reach its End of Life on November 7, 2025. This transition reflects Drupal’s focus on modularity and future-ready solutions for meta tag management. Detailed documentation is available on the Metatag project page.
