W3Techs Data Shows About Half of Detected Drupal Sites on End-of-Life Versions

Sites running Drupal major versions that have reached end of life make up about half of the Drupal population detected by W3Techs, according to data dated 25 August 2026. The survey puts Drupal 10 at 30.6%, Drupal 7 at 29.6%, Drupal 11 at 19.2%, Drupal 9 at 10%, Drupal 8 at 8.5% and Drupal 6 at 2%, with Drupal 5 at 0.1% and Drupal 4 below 0.1%. Based on the displayed percentages, end-of-life versions account for about 50.2% of the Drupal sites W3Techs identifies.

The distribution shows an ecosystem moving towards Drupal 11 while large older-version shares remain. W3Techs' historical series puts Drupal 11 at 5.3% on 1 August 2025 and 19.2% on 25 August 2026, while Drupal 7 fell from 35.1% to 29.6%. Over the same period, the share of end-of-life versions displayed fell from about 60.4% to about 50.2%.

A Gspikes blog post published on 23 August highlighted the continuing presence of Drupal 7 using a 22 August W3Techs snapshot, when Drupal 7 stood at 29.7%. Gspikes explicitly labels its absolute-count calculation as an estimate and derives roughly 205,000 Drupal 7 sites by applying the W3Techs version distribution to Drupal.org reporting totals. Neither source states that the population it measures can be treated as equivalent to the other's.

Drupal.org's legacy-inclusive usage table provides a separate measurement based on sites that report their Drupal core version. For the week beginning 16 August 2026, it recorded 640,801 reporting sites, including 205,069 on Drupal 10, 161,765 on Drupal 11, 173,488 on Drupal 7, 51,082 on Drupal 9 and 41,845 on Drupal 8. Versions that had reached Drupal project end-of-life accounted for 273,967 reporting sites, or about 42.8% of the total.

The W3Techs and Drupal.org figures are not directly comparable because the services measure different populations and use different collection methods. Drupal.org describes its weekly figures as the number of sites that reported using each core release, while W3Techs surveys what it calls the relevant web and identifies technologies from page patterns and other publicly available signals. W3Techs also states that technology identification cannot be completely accurate, while Drupal.org reporting totals can vary between weeks.

Drupal 7 reached project end of life on 5 January 2025 and no longer receives security or compatibility updates from the Drupal project. End of life does not, however, establish the support position of every Drupal 7 site because the Drupal Association's Extended Security Support Provider Program currently lists HeroDevs and Tag1 Consulting as certified vendors. The W3Techs percentage therefore should not be read as a count of Drupal 7 sites receiving no security support.

Drupal 10 adds another deadline to the current version distribution. The Drupal core release schedule says Drupal 10 will reach end of life on 9 December 2026, during the same week Drupal 12 is scheduled for release. With Drupal 10 still the largest group in the 25 August W3Techs data at 30.6%, the deadline places another major-version transition alongside the continuing movement away from older releases.
