Drupal 11 Upgrade Reveals Slick Carousel jQuery 4 Compatibility Pitfalls
Compatibility issues between Slick Carousel and jQuery 4 are being reported when teams upgrade existing Drupal sites to Drupal 11. Ross Bale of Computer Minds describes how the problem shows up during the upgrade of a long-running Drupal site.
The first issue comes from deprecated jQuery APIs removed in jQuery 4, including jQuery.type, which Slick uses internally. After switching to a newer development version of Slick that removes those calls, further problems appear when the plugin wraps slides in extra container elements during initialisation, which breaks custom selectors and disrupts more complex carousel setups such as thumbnail navigation linked to a main image gallery.
Ross traces this behaviour to Slick’s handling of its row configuration and to differences between earlier minified and unminified releases that change how grid-style wrapping is applied. The post shows how these DOM changes affect existing implementations and highlights the need for Drupal teams to review ageing front-end dependencies during Drupal 11 upgrade planning.
