Drupal 12 to Remove Migrate Drupal and Migrate Drupal UI Modules from Core

Drupal 12 Will Remove Migrate Drupal and Migrate Drupal UI Modules from Core

Plans for Drupal 12 include the removal of the Migrate Drupal and Migrate Drupal UI modules from Drupal core. The modules were originally designed to help site maintainers migrate websites built on Drupal 6 and Drupal 7 into newer Drupal versions. The change is being tracked through a core meta issue that outlines components scheduled for removal in the next major release.

The issue, titled Deprecate dependencies, libraries, modules, and themes that will be removed from Drupal 12 core, documents a broader effort within Drupal core to phase out legacy dependencies and outdated components. The Migrate Drupal and Migrate Drupal UI modules are included among the modules scheduled for deprecation as Drupal prepares for the transition to Drupal 12.

The migration modules were introduced to support upgrades from earlier Drupal versions. For most modern Drupal sites the change will have little impact, since the modules are only used during migrations from legacy Drupal installations. Drupal 7 reached end of life on 5 January 2025, while Drupal 6 reached end of life on 24 February 2016. With both platforms now outside the supported lifecycle, the dedicated migration modules are entering Drupal’s standard deprecation process.

Although the modules will not be included in Drupal 12, they will remain available throughout the Drupal 11 lifecycle. Drupal 11 is currently expected to remain supported until the end of 2028, allowing organisations that still operate legacy Drupal sites additional time to complete migrations.

The deprecation work forms part of a broader effort within Drupal core to simplify the platform and remove outdated dependencies before the next major release. The same meta issue also tracks the planned deprecation of several other modules, themes, libraries, and dependencies scheduled for removal as Drupal evolves toward Drupal 12.
