AI Neuron Connects Drupal AI With PHP Agents and Workflows

A new developer-facing bridge connects Drupal AI with the Neuron PHP framework without creating a second provider configuration layer. The AI Neuron module lets Neuron use providers, models and keys already configured in Drupal while exposing Neuron agents, tools and workflows through Drupal's plugin system.

Antonio De Marco, director of Nuvole, created the project on 24 September 2026 and introduced it publicly on 30 September. In his announcement, he described Drupal AI providers as native Neuron providers and Neuron agents, tools and workflows as Drupal plugins.

The provider bridge keeps model configuration inside Drupal. Each Neuron agent resolves the provider Drupal has configured for the operation it performs, including chat, tool calling, or structured output. Model calls still pass through Drupal AI, so Neuron doesn't need to connect directly to the underlying vendor for those operations.

The integration also works in the other direction. A Drupal module can declare Neuron agents, tools and workflows as plugins, and manager services return native Neuron objects that can be used wherever the framework accepts them. That makes the module more than a provider adapter: it lets Drupal developers build Neuron-based agentic behaviour using familiar Drupal plugin patterns.

AI Neuron also stores conversations as Drupal entities. Messages can therefore be bundleable and fieldable, while context-window trimming archives older messages rather than deleting them. The project page says interrupted turns are retained for the record and skipped on the next call so a failed request does not necessarily end the conversation.

Workflow runs are also persisted to Drupal's database. That allows a run to suspend in one request and resume in a later request or queue worker, which the project identifies as the basis for deferred tools, approval gates and interrupts. This durable state is already described as part of the current module, not just a future roadmap item.

Observability remains inside Drupal as well. Neuron reports run events to the ai_neuron log channel at a configurable level, and the module provides read-only administration pages for inspecting stored conversations and durable workflow records. Each area is protected by its own permission.

The module also supports multiple streaming formats. Agents can stream in a shape intended for the Vercel AI SDK, AG-UI, Neuron's own vocabulary or an unshaped form, giving front ends several ways to consume agent output.

An example submodule demonstrates the current integration from the command line. It includes a blog-writing agent, three tools, and a three-node workflow that edits an existing post, giving developers a working reference across the module's three main plugin types.

Some of the deeper Drupal interoperability is still planned. The roadmap includes generating Neuron tools from installed Tool API plugins, using their typed inputs and JSON schema, so the same Drupal tool could be called from Neuron without being reimplemented. It also includes exposing Drupal AI agent plugins as Neuron agents and running Neuron evaluations against agents already configured on the site.

Drupal.org currently lists only the 1.0.x-dev development version of AI Neuron. Stable releases for the project are eligible for Drupal's security advisory policy, but no supported stable release exists, so the development branch does not carry that coverage.

The project lists Nuvole and the European Commission and European Union Institutions, Agencies and Bodies as supporting organisations.
