NYS Office of the Attorney General
The Attorney General's Office in New York serves as the chief legal authority for the state and acts as the "People's Lawyer," protecting the legal rights of citizens, organizations, and natural resources. The office provides legal advice to the Executive branch and represents the state in legal matters. It is responsible for safeguarding consumers, investors, public health, the environment, civil rights, and the rights of workers and businesses. The office also oversees the State Organized Crime Task Force and the Medicaid Fraud Control Unit. The Department of Law is organized into five main divisions: Appeals and Opinions, State Counsel, Criminal Justice, Economic Justice, and Social Justice. The office employs over 650 Assistant Attorneys General and more than 1,700 staff members, including forensic accountants, legal assistants, scientists, and investigators, across various locations in New York State.
