NETNODE AG, a Swiss-based digital agency with a strong track record in Drupal and NextJS development, has introduced NodeHive, an eco-conscious headless Content Management System (CMS) designed for organisations committed to sustainability and innovation.

"NodeHive is an easy to use Headless/Composable CMS with rich enterprise features. It's API-first (GraphQL, JSON-Api, Rest), Open-Source and Eco-conscious," claims the documentation.

Lukas Fischer, Founder and Product Steward of NodeHive, emphasised the platform's dedication to eco-conscious practices and its role in promoting a greener digital future.

"NodeHive is more than a headless CMS. It's a movement towards a greener and more sustainable digital future."

NETNODE's commitment to environmental sustainability is evident in various initiatives, including tree planting for new subscriptions, reliance on renewable energy, and promoting eco-friendly and inclusive coding practices. This commitment extends beyond the product, encouraging sustainable practices throughout the digital ecosystem.

Alka Elizabeth, sub-editor with The DropTimes [TDT], had an opportunity to interact with Lukas Fischer as he probed on the motivation behind NodeHive and its eco-conscious approach. Fischer explained that,

"NodeHive was a natural step forward for us. Since around 2019, we changed our organisation towards a distributed leadership model. We worked on our values and culture. The result, among other things, is that we have a tree planting initiative 1 at NETNODE and a strong culture, which we document. 2 Once we started to work on NodeHive, it was clear that Eco-Consciousness should be at the product's core. What exactly we mean by that can be found here. 3 "

The organisation had shifted to a distributed leadership model and had a strong culture of sustainability, including a tree-planting initiative and documented cultural values. NodeHive was developed with eco-consciousness as a core value, as outlined on the NodeHive website.

NodeHive is an API-first and composable platform designed to serve content creators, marketing professionals, and developers. The platform's robust enterprise features include multisite functionality, content planning, media management, multilingual support, a visual editor, and specialised tools. Built upon the foundation of Drupal, NodeHive offers customisation and flexibility through its open-source model, eliminating vendor lock-in.

NodeHive's choice to build upon the Drupal platform was driven by their extensive experience with Drupal, spanning 15 years, and the rich ecosystem of modules available. Fischer pointed out that this allowed them to leverage existing solutions and contribute to the Drupal community.

"In our exploration of potential backends, we evaluated CMS systems like Strapi, Sanity, Directus, and others. While each had its merits, we recognised the unmatched open-source flexibility of Drupal and its extensive module ecosystem. This insight drove us to develop NodeHive, combining Drupal's strengths with our vision for a state-of-the-art Headless CMS."

added Fischer.

On seeking clarification regarding the differentiation of  Nodehive from ContentaCMS and AcquiaCMS Headless Starterkit, Lukas noted that NodeHive is a convergence of many ideas including Strapi, Contentful, Contenta, and many others. The main differentiator is the concept of Spaces as well as the visual editor.

NodeHive is available as a Software as a Service (SaaS) application with flexible pricing options and as an open-source plugin,4 seamlessly integrating into existing Drupal solutions. NETNODE AG, under Fischer's leadership, also offers a comprehensive suite of digital transformation services covering strategy, design, development, and maintenance. This holistic approach aligns with NodeHive's mission of creating a more sustainable digital future.

When asked about the future of NodeHive, Fischer emphasised they focused on one thing.

"Ease of use! NodeHive is, and should always remain, user-friendly. We aim to strike the perfect balance between flexibility and ease of use. Having been familiar with Drupal for an extended period, I understand that there are often multiple approaches to accomplishing a task. However, it's essential to avoid making things needlessly complicated. Our objective with NodeHive is to ensure that the Editor Experience, Site Building Experience, and Frontend Developer Experience are as straightforward as possible. At the core of our product lies the visual editor, which already provides a smooth editing workflow. Nevertheless, we are determined to enhance this aspect further. To this end, we have published a roadmap."

NodeHive represents a significant step towards eco-conscious digital solutions, combining the power of Drupal with a commitment to sustainability. Under Lukas Fischer's leadership, NETNODE AG is pioneering a greener and more sustainable digital future that prioritises innovation and environmental consciousness.

"I hope that we, as an industry, understand that building websites with sustainability in mind can have an impact. We live in a digitised world, and we, as platform providers, have to weigh in on our CO2 impact more than ever before. We want to contribute in these three fields: Energy-Efficient infrastructure, Eco-Friendly Code, and raising awareness of eco-conscious digital solutions."

concluded Fischer.
