Nuvole's Latest Stable Drupal Module Releases

Nuvole recently shared an insightful blog post by Fabian Bircher, shedding light on the latest developments in their widely used Drupal contrib modules: Config Filter, Config Split, and Config Ignore. These modules have recently received new stable releases, each bringing improvements and promising changes to the Drupal ecosystem.

The blog post opens by mentioning the post-DrupalCon period, during which the dust settled after a highly energetic and productive event. During this time, Nuvole decided to release new stable versions for these three modules, addressing various aspects and enhancing their functionality.

Config Filter:

Config Filter, considered the most stable among these modules, saw new releases that marked a shift to Gitlab CI. Additionally, he addressed a slight inconsistency in how config storages were expected to behave. The first release introduced a bug, but thanks to the keen eye of early adopters, the developer was able to fix this issue quickly. While Config Filter will continue to be supported, its relevance may decrease as stable versions of modules that previously depended on it are released.

Config Split:

The oldest of the three modules, Config Split, introduced a new stable 2.0.0 release. This release addressed bugs and edge cases discovered in the previous year's release. Furthermore, it reintroduced functionality from the 1.x branch, which had changed, thereby helping sites that had been holding off on upgrading. The plan now includes deprecating the 1.x branch and ending support with the end of Drupal 10 support.

Config Ignore:

In the case of Config Ignore, previous releases of the 3.x branch were not feature-compatible with the 2.x branch. However, the stable 3.0 release is a significant overhaul from the previous 3.x beta versions. It now offers extensive configurability, allowing users to configure what configuration should be ignored during create, update, and delete processes for both import and export operations. Alternatively, users can opt for a simpler setup that resembles previous versions. The flexibility of Config Ignore is a notable feature, as it can be configured to behave like the last 2.x release, the last 2.x release with a popular patch that allows filtering on export, or the previous 3.x release.

The development of these Drupal 8 modules has always followed a "like a PHP library" approach, with projects such as UI Patterns initially hosted on GitHub. Config Split and Config Filter were shipped with their docker-compose files and scripts for easy integration into Drupal sites, a practice later replaced by Drupal spoons.
