Drupal CMS to Launch New Base Recipe in 2025, Replacing Standard Install Profile

Drupal CMS to launch new base recipe in 2025

Drupal CMS is preparing for a significant update with the introduction of a new base recipe, scheduled for its initial release on January 15, 2025. This update will replace the traditional "Standard" install profile and aims to deliver essential, modern functionality to enhance both the user experience and the overall usability of Drupal for its target audience. The development of this base recipe is based on extensive community feedback, market research, and benchmarking against competitor platforms.

The new base recipe will install critical core modules and apply foundational recipes that replace the older install profiles. Among its key features, the base recipe will simplify user login experiences by allowing email-based logins and redirect users to the correct destination after expired sessions. The admin interface will also see an upgrade with the introduction of the Gin theme and a left-side navigation menu, providing a more modern and user-friendly interface compared to previous versions.

Some of the standout features included in the base recipe are:

  • Email-based logins to reduce user complexity in managing credentials.
  • Quick search for admin pages via the Coffee module, improving efficiency in locating admin settings.
  • Trash module, which allows users to recover deleted content, adding an extra layer of safety for content management.
  • Linkit support in CKEditor to make internal linking faster and easier by searching site content directly.
  • A dashboard interface as the default login page, replacing the standard user page with a more content focused overview.
  • Focal point cropping to help manage image displays across different screen sizes and aspect ratios.
  • Media management tools, including media download and delete options, for improved handling of media files.
Content cloning functionality for duplicating content quickly and efficiently.

Additionally, foundational SEO support through Pathauto and Redirect modules will be included, ensuring that users have the necessary tools for URL management and basic SEO practices right out of the box.

Despite significant advancements, the base recipe does not yet include some key features that are still under development. For instance, a better default site search using Search API is in the works but won’t be part of the initial release. Similarly, autosave functionality for forms will be included in future updates, though careful planning is required to avoid conflicts with other ongoing projects such as the Experience Builder initiative.

Other features, like improved select lists and sitewide alerts, are still facing technical limitations or compatibility concerns with upcoming initiatives, though these are recognized as desirable additions for the future. The Drupal team is actively working to balance these new functionalities with the broader development roadmap, ensuring that future versions of Drupal CMS will continue to innovate and meet user expectations.

Pamela Barone, who provided this update, noted that many exciting features are still in the pipeline, and while the base recipe offers a strong foundation, other tracks in development will further enhance Drupal's functionality. Each of these tracks is still undergoing refinement, with the final proposals for Drupal CMS features expected by November 1, 2024.

System updates like project browser, automatic updates, and upgrade status will further streamline site management, ensuring that users can easily keep their Drupal installations up to date without needing developer tools. This lowers the entry barrier for nontechnical users and ensures that Drupal remains a competitive CMS in the marketplace.

The upcoming release represents a significant step forward for Drupal as it continues to refine its core functionality, making it more accessible and feature rich for users across various industries. The new base recipe will lay a solid foundation for future developments and is expected to greatly improve both the user experience and site management efficiency.
