Drupal 11 Gets its First Feature Release - Drupal 11.1.0

Drupal 11

Drupal 11.1.0, the first feature release of Drupal 11, has officially launched, introducing major improvements aimed at enhancing performance, flexibility, and developer experience. The update features a revamped recipe system, object-oriented hooks, a new icon management API, and support for PHP 8.4. The release is seen as a key milestone for the Drupal platform, with contributions from the Drupal Association and the broader community.

The updated recipe system allows site administrators to input API keys and other credentials directly, streamlining integrations with third-party services. Recipes can now execute configuration actions such as adding blocks and enabling layout builders, reducing manual setup, and simplifying deployments. This enhancement offers greater control and efficiency for site builders and administrators.

Object-oriented hooks mark a significant shift from traditional global function hooks, offering a modern approach to hook development. Developers can now define hooks as class-based methods using the Hook attribute, leading to cleaner, more maintainable code. Drupal’s core runtime hooks have been fully converted to this structure, providing a better development experience for PHP developers.

The release also introduces a new icon management API, enabling modules and themes to define reusable icon packs with unique identifiers. This update allows for consistent and efficient use of icons across Drupal sites. Additionally, the Workspaces UI has been restructured into a standalone module, giving developers more modular control over content workflows and offering site builders increased flexibility.

Performance improvements are another highlight of Drupal 11.1.0. Render caching for forms speeds up page load times, and optimization of the asset aggregation algorithm increases cache hit rates for CDNs, reducing redundant downloads. The release is fully compatible with PHP 8.4, ensuring support for the latest language features. More details about these updates can be found in the full blog post from the Drupal Association by Gabor Hojtsy.
