DDEV 2025 Plans: Governance, Sustainability, and Technical Enhancements

DDEV 2025 Plans Governance, Sustainability, and Technical Enhancements

DDEV has announced its plans for 2025, which focus on community support, sustainability, and technical advancements. The annual review and planning meeting on March 4, 2025, will serve as a platform for discussions on project priorities and invite user input to shape future developments.

A key initiative for the year includes formalizing governance for the DDEV Foundation, with a proposed three-person board structure to enhance financial oversight. Sustainability efforts will emphasize improving marketing strategies to clearly communicate the need for financial contributions to support the two full-time developers working on the project. Additionally, DDEV aims to expand its contributor base through recorded training sessions and blog content rather than scheduled events, reflecting past engagement trends.

Several funded and proposed technical initiatives are on the agenda. The TYPO3 Association is backing the integration of XHGui into DDEV, with completion expected by March 31, 2025. Other enhancements include top-level Node.js support, a web-based add-on registry, and new approaches to domain name resolution through mDNS. Proposed features include improved add-on management, a Go-based Upsun add-on, and the redevelopment of the ddev-platformsh add-on in Go. The team also seeks to replace “Gitpod Classic,” improve self-diagnosis capabilities, and enhance Windows/WSL2 packaging and installation.

DDEV has also applied for Google Summer of Code, aiming to mentor contributors and develop prioritized initiatives. Community input remains central to the planning process, with users encouraged to provide feedback through various support channels.

Further details on the 2025 roadmap can be found in the full blog post by Randy Fay on the DDEV website.
