Roland Obermair Highlights Archipelago Commons, a Drupal-Based Repository for GLAM Institutions
Roland Obermair diverts our attention to an open-source Digital Objects Repository and Digital Asset Management (DAM) system built on Drupal 10, Archipelago Commons. Designed for the Galleries, Libraries, Archives, and Museums (GLAM) community, the platform provides a robust, standards-based framework for managing and preserving digital assets without vendor lock-in or licensing fees.
Key features include IIIF integration for high-resolution image viewing, OCR capabilities for searchable scanned documents, and support for a wide range of metadata standards such as Library of Congress linked data, ERIC, and Wikidata. Archipelago also integrates OpenStreetMap for geolocation, uses Solr for advanced search, supports diverse media types, and is compatible with S3 storage solutions like MinIO. The Cantaloupe Image Server powers dynamic image rendering.
Archipelago is extended through custom Strawberry-field modules, offering tailored functionality for digital repositories. Its modular, open-source foundation ensures long-term sustainability and adaptability.
The University of Edinburgh, Barnard College, Union College, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, and the Association Montessori Internationale are among the institutions currently using Archipelago.
Roland’s team holds official preferred partner status for Archipelago Commons and supports GLAM institutions with planning, setup, migration, and more.
