Coding Drupal with AI: Jacob Rockowitz on Mentoring, Vibe Coding and Developer Workflows
A recent blog post by Jacob Rockowitz examines his experience experimenting with AI-assisted coding, using Python as a proxy to better understand how agentic workflows could influence Drupal development.
Although an experienced PHP and Drupal developer, Jacob deliberately chose an unfamiliar language to simulate the learning curve that junior developers face in the AI era. His goal was to explore both the potential and limitations of “vibe coding,” where prompts guide much of the development process.
Throughout the experiment, he used AI not only to generate code but also to explain language patterns, document logic, and create personalised reference materials that mapped Python concepts to PHP equivalents. He argues that AI can accelerate understanding when treated as a learning partner rather than a replacement for developer judgment.
Jacob concludes that AI will reshape how software is built and how contributors are mentored within the Drupal community. He encourages developers to share workflows, provide strong code examples to improve AI outputs, and approach AI as a tool for deeper learning rather than just faster production.
