IntentUI Explores Adaptive Interfaces for Drupal
Moments of hesitation are common in digital interfaces. A cursor hovers over a button, moves away, then returns again without clicking. These pauses often reflect uncertainty rather than inactivity, yet most interfaces remain silent during that moment.
IntentUI is an experimental Drupal concept that explores how interfaces might respond to these signals. Instead of waiting only for commands such as clicks or form submissions, the idea proposes detecting behavioural cues like hesitation and adapting the interface in real time. Subtle visual changes — such as highlighting or enlarging key actions — could help guide users when uncertainty appears during interaction.
The concept is proposed by Drupal contributor Sibu Stephen, who describes it as a behavioural adaptation layer operating on the frontend. When hesitation patterns are detected, the interface applies dynamic CSS states that adjust visual elements without collecting or storing personal user data.
The experiment raises broader questions about how user experience could evolve within content management systems. Many usability problems arise not from broken functionality but from moments where users pause, reconsider, or search for clarity in an interface.
While still an early-stage concept, IntentUI suggests a possible direction for Drupal interfaces — moving beyond static page behaviour toward more responsive and assistive interaction patterns.
