Drupal MCP Server Module Stalls as Maintainer Seeks Funding Support

Development of the MCP Server module for Drupal has stalled after its maintainer, Mateu Aguiló Bosch, said the project currently lacks funding to continue work. Mateu, a lead engineer at Lullabot, made the appeal in a LinkedIn post asking whether an organisation that needs the capability might sponsor further development.

The MCP Server project aims to provide a standardised way for Drupal sites to expose capabilities to artificial intelligence systems using the Model Context Protocol, positioning it as part of the platform’s emerging AI infrastructure.

Several Drupal community members responded to the appeal, highlighting the module’s potential role in future development. Pablo Morales Toro, principal technical architect, wrote that Drupal needs its own MCP server “to stay up in the agentic game,” while Niels Aers, chief product officer at Dropsolid AI, described it as “an essential part of Drupal’s AI future.”

Other developers shared practical challenges in working with MCP integrations. Justin Keiser described difficulties running MCP locally in a Windows environment using WSL2 and DDEV, reflecting the current lack of standardised tooling.

“Several projects are using home-grown alternatives as a result. Beware of this approach.”

Mateu cautioned that MCP servers function as remote execution environments, meaning ad hoc implementations may introduce security risks if not handled carefully.

The module currently requires sponsorship to resume development, with Mateu indicating that financial backing would allow work on the project to continue.
