Drupal Association Confirmed as Mentoring Organization for Google Summer of Code 2026
The Drupal Association has been confirmed as a mentoring organisation for Google Summer of Code (GSoC) 2026, Google’s global open-source mentorship program that introduces new contributors to collaborative software development.
Google Summer of Code is an international online program that supports new contributors through paid development projects lasting more than 12 weeks. Participants collaborate with mentors from recognised organisations while gaining practical experience contributing to open source software.
The Drupal Association’s project ideas for the 2026 program focus heavily on artificial intelligence integration within the Drupal ecosystem. Many of the proposed ideas align with ongoing efforts to expand AI-assisted tooling and developer experience within Drupal, including work connected to the Starshot initiative.
Proposed ideas for this year’s program include an AI-powered content generation assistant, an AI-driven Drupal recipe generator linked to the Starshot initiative, tools for detecting toxic content and spam using AI, and a one-click AI translation assistant.
Additional project concepts include an AI-powered configuration navigator for Drupal, a knowledge assistant designed to help users navigate Drupal documentation and workflows, and an interactive product tour aimed at improving onboarding within Drupal core.
The Drupal community has participated in the Google Summer of Code program for many years, using the initiative to introduce students and early-career developers to the platform while strengthening the contributor pipeline for the project.
Organisers say participants selected for GSoC projects work closely with mentors throughout the program and receive a stipend while completing their development work. Many past participants continue contributing to Drupal after the program, with some becoming long-term contributors within the community.
Registration for Google Summer of Code 2026 opens on 16 March for prospective contributors interested in applying to work with mentoring organisations such as the Drupal Association.
