DrupalCon Europe Reports Emissions Drop with New Carbon Measurement Data
DrupalCon Europe has published carbon measurement data from its 2025 event, providing a detailed view of its environmental impact and informing future sustainability planning. Data from DrupalCon Vienna 2025 show total emissions of 512.8 tCO₂e, a significant reduction from 1,574.57 tCO₂e in 2024.
The findings are significant because they move event sustainability from general commitments to measurable outcomes. Organisers are using the data to guide decisions on venue selection, energy use, and waste management, with the aim of reducing impact across future DrupalCon events.
According to the update on DrupalCon Europe, delegate travel remains the dominant source of emissions, accounting for approximately 94–95% of the total footprint, largely driven by air travel. However, overall travel emissions declined compared to the previous year, supported in part by Vienna’s central location and rail connectivity.
Excluding travel, emissions were measured at 26.97 tCO₂e, with heating contributing 48%, followed by materials, food and beverage, and accommodation. The report also notes reductions in energy consumption and improvements in waste management through recycling and diversion strategies.
Beyond measurement, organisers highlight a range of sustainability practices implemented across the event. These include plant-forward catering, reduced single-use materials, energy-efficient venues, and partnerships with suppliers aligned on environmental goals.
The update emphasises that sustainability is an ongoing process and encourages community participation through travel choices, reduced waste, and improved data sharing. The approach positions transparency and measurement as central to building more sustainable DrupalCon events.
