Talking Drupal Returns to Live Streaming Format
After more than a decade, Stephen Cross is returning Talking Drupal to a live streaming format, revisiting the show’s original approach to broadcasting.
The show was initially produced as a live video stream using tools such as Google Hangouts On Air, prioritising accessibility and conversation over production quality. It later shifted toward edited and, at times, audio-only formats, introducing post-production processes that allowed for corrections and refinements.
According to Cross, the return to live streaming reflects a change in approach rather than a technical requirement. A recent six-episode trial run informed the decision, demonstrating the advantages of real-time interaction and reduced post-production overhead.
Live streaming introduces both benefits and constraints. It enables direct audience participation and faster publishing cycles, but limits the ability to correct errors after recording. Cross notes that issues encountered during testing, including audio problems in a recorded segment, highlighted the need to accept imperfections as part of the format.
The shift also reflects a broader change in content strategy. The move away from edited production emphasises immediacy and audience engagement, aligning with how community-driven media formats operate in real time.
