miniOrange Deepens Drupal Involvement with Local Events, Freelance Support, and Global Sponsorship
A Pune-based cybersecurity company specialising in Single Sign-On (SSO) and Identity & Access Management (IAM), miniOrange has broadened its role in the Drupal ecosystem through local meetups, global event sponsorships, and ongoing open-source support. The company has been both a consistent presence in the community and a strategic sponsor, locally through Drupal Pune meetups and globally via its continued support for DrupalCons.
At the local level, miniOrange has hosted several Drupal Pune meetups. These events serve multiple purposes for the company: they create opportunities to engage with the developer community, support learning and mentorship, and act as a practical platform to onboard and upskill new team members. New hires, especially fresh graduates, are often encouraged to take part in these meetups to practice public speaking, improve professional presentation skills, and gain real-world exposure to the Drupal ecosystem.
"It exposes the team to the type of community, individuals that they are dealing with via emails,"
said Rahul Kolhatkar, Senior Business Analyst at miniOrange.
"It's a fantastic platform for training our new teammates, especially freshers, on the skills of public speaking and professional exhibition."
While miniOrange's core business is focused on security-centric custom development, it occasionally receives requests for site-building or maintenance projects. Rather than taking on this work internally, the company refers such opportunities to freelance developers from the local Drupal community. This approach helps channel work to independent professionals and small businesses while keeping the focus of miniOrange on its primary expertise.
"We've made sure that the local community benefits from this exposure," Rahul explained. "We've asked our community freelance contacts to take up these projects and grow their business as well."
The company's investment in the Drupal community extends beyond local meetups. This year marks its second consecutive Platinum Sponsorship at DrupalCamp Pune. The decision to return as a top-tier sponsor reflects the tangible value the company finds in participating in Drupal events. These events serve as more than marketing opportunities; they provide space for real dialogue with developers, partners, and clients.
"We don't even have to try; it's always a good time at Drupal Conferences," Rahul said. "Talking to the community and attending the keynotes and sessions gives some insight into the pain points in the Drupal web environment, and we can have a plan on alleviating these pain points."
Beyond regional camps, miniOrange has invested in major international events as well. The company has sponsored three consecutive DrupalCons: Lille in 2023, Portland in 2024, and Atlanta in 2025. Its presence at DrupalCon Vienna is expected to be confirmed later this year.
These global engagements offer more than visibility. For miniOrange, there are opportunities to identify trends, discover unmet needs in the ecosystem, and gather feedback that can inform the company's own development roadmap. The team also draws on experiences from other platforms like WordPress, Joomla, and Shopify, platforms where miniOrange is active, and looks for ways to bring proven functionality into Drupal.
Sustainability and long-term contribution to open source are key parts of the company's strategy. Revenue from its commercially successful standalone Identity Provider (IdP) enables miniOrange to support open-source projects financially. This kind of self-funding model allows the company to reinvest in platforms like Drupal, ensuring that improvements benefit both the community and their clients.
"Since we've got other projects like our standalone IdP that generates revenue for us, we can use that to fund our open-source projects," Rahul said.
He also emphasised the importance of strategic collaboration within the Drupal space. Rather than working in silos, companies and agencies could explore joint initiatives, share technical knowledge, and co-develop tools that address common challenges.
"It would be better for all of us if we could work together for the betterment of the Drupal Project, for growing together," he said. "It provides us with a unique opportunity to use our collective knowledge to provide a top-of-the-line experience for our clients."
miniOrange's engagement with Drupal reflects a long-term view. By participating in meetups, funding events, supporting freelance developers, and sponsoring global conferences, the company is building more than visibility; it's contributing to the resilience and growth of the ecosystem it works in. For organisations that rely on open-source infrastructure, that kind of investment is both strategic and necessary.
