Become a Mentor at DrupalCon Vienna 2025 and Support New Contributors
Organisers of DrupalCon Vienna 2025 are inviting volunteers to take up mentoring roles during the upcoming conference, which will be held from 14–17 October 2025. The call, announced on the DrupalCon Europe LinkedIn page and detailed on the official mentoring page, highlights the importance of mentors in supporting new and returning contributors during the four-day event.
Mentorship Roles
Mentors will be tasked with welcoming contributors, helping them set up their development environments, guiding them through contribution workflows, and assisting in issue triage ahead of Contribution Day. They will also review participants’ work during the conference and provide general support, such as directing attendees to appropriate contribution rooms. Organisers emphasise that technical expertise is not a prerequisite; the primary focus is on creating a welcoming and supportive environment that encourages first-time contributors to get involved.
Recognition and Credits
Both mentors and contributors will receive official contribution credits for their involvement. These credits serve as recognition within the Drupal community, acknowledging the time and effort invested in strengthening the open-source ecosystem and enhancing professional credibility for those who participate.
Preparatory Sessions
To prepare for their roles, mentors can attend orientation and triage sessions scheduled on site. The first orientation will take place on October 14 from 14:45 to 15:30 in Room BoF -2.82, followed by a second session on October 15 from 10:30 to 11:15 in the same room. An issue triage session is set for October 16 from 15:00 to 15:45, also in Room BoF -2.82. In addition, three First-Time Contributor Workshops will run on October 14, October 15, and October 17, giving new participants structured guidance in joining the project.
Why It Matters
According to the organisers, mentorship offers multiple benefits: experienced contributors gain confidence by explaining concepts to others, while newcomers receive crucial support that helps them integrate into the community. Mentors also have opportunities to learn from peers, expand professional networks, and give back to the Drupal project by helping nurture the next generation of contributors.
Getting Involved
Interested participants can find more details on the DrupalCon Vienna Mentoring page. Mentors may also connect through Drupal Slack in the #mentoring-team-coordination channel. During the event, a dedicated Mentoring booth will be available in the exhibit hall, alongside several BoF sessions leading up to Contribution Day.
