AmyJune Hineline Outlines Five Checks for Accessible Social Media
During “Scrolling Without Barriers: Practical Accessibility Tips for Social Media” at Drupal Camp Asheville 2026, AmyJune Hineline, certification community architect at The Linux Foundation, outlined five checks for reducing accessibility barriers in social posts. The session took place on 11 July 2026 from 14:00 to 14:45 EDT in the Mt. Mitchell room. Drupal Asheville later published a video recording of the presentation.
AmyJune advised content teams to add alt text, review automatically generated captions, use CamelCase for multiword hashtags, keep essential information outside images, and structure posts for readability. She explained that alt text should communicate an image’s purpose in the context of a post rather than catalogue every visible detail. She also recommended short paragraphs, logical line breaks, clear language, and restrained use of emojis and hashtags.
The session treated accessibility as part of the publishing workflow rather than a correction added after content goes live. Hineline said caption reviews should check contrast, line breaks, timing, meaningful sounds, and transcription errors, while automated tools should remain subject to human review for context, accuracy, tone, and meaning. Her closing checklist placed the review before publication, when teams can correct barriers without returning to posts that some platforms may not allow them to edit.
