Acquia Renames Certification Title to Make it Inclusive

Acquia has changed the name of its highest Certificate qualification from “Drupal Grand Master” to 'Acquia Triple Certified Drupal Expert'.  The shortened version of the certification name is “Triple Certified”. The Grand Master title first came out in 2015 for those who successfully completed the Drupal Certification exam in the Drupal developer, front-end, and  Back-end categories.

As Dries Buytaert rightly pointed out in his Acquia blog, “The words we use matter. They make a big difference toward eliminating subtle forms of racism, sexism, and more in the technology industry.” This name change acknowledges the need for inclusive language and was crowdsourced with the help of the Drupal Community.

Dries also acknowledged that this name change was just a step even if in the right direction to make Drupal, a more diverse and inclusive community.

Inclusive language acknowledges unity even in diversity respecting all people, being sensitive to differences but avoiding expressions or words that imply or express any form of stereotyping including sexist, racist language or any kind of bias, prejudice, or discrimination.

Other examples of such change in the naming convention in the tech field to make it inclusive are the use of ‘main’ instead of master (connotation of reference to master/slave), ‘denylist and allowlist’ instead of ‘blacklist and whitelist’’ and person-hours instead of man-hours.
