Drupal 7 EOL Extended Again One More Year!

Owing to the large user base of websites still on Drupal 7, the Drupal Association along with the Drupal Project Lead Dries Buytaert and the Drupal Security Working Group have decided to extend Drupal  7’s End-Of-Life to November 1, 2023.

Drupal 7 is the most used Drupal version even today and also the longest-running version of Drupal available till date. There are Drupal 7 sites still powering civic engagements in government installations, educational sites with huge content repositories for the faculty, students, and staff, and there are many businesses and non-profit organizations.

Almost half of the Drupal sites (552,430 of 1027,321) are on Drupal 7 and their concerns had to be addressed by the Drupal community. Interestingly, Drupal.org is also still on Drupal 7.

The Drupal Association announced through a PSA (Public Service Announcement) that the scheduled Drupal 7 End-Of-Life will be re-evaluated annually. Also

“As a majority of all sites in the Drupal project are still on Drupal 7, we have decided that there is a clear need to provide additional support to the members of our community still using this version. At the end of the day, we have a moral imperative to keep as many of those sites secure as we can.”

The Drupal Association has set July 2023 as the time when they will decide whether to extend the Drupal 7 community support another additional year. Factors that will be taken into consideration will be community support, Drupal 7 usage, and active Drupal 7 maintainers. Currently, many Drupal 7 maintainers and companies are paying to support Drupal 7.

Is this setting the stage for a fork that might work in the best interests of all concerned? What do you think?
