Drupal Powers 7% of Top 10K Websites; Double than AEM: Study
Sebastien Lissarrague challenges the idea that Drupal is losing ground by going straight to the data. According to BuiltWith, Drupal powers about 2.5% of the top one million websites. That might not sound like much—until you look closer. In the top 100,000 sites, Drupal’s share jumps to 5.6%. In the top 10,000, it’s nearly 7%. That means Drupal is more common the higher up you go. Among the biggest, most heavily trafficked sites, Drupal is clearly still a go-to platform.
On the flip side, usage stats from drupal.org show Drupal 7 is finally winding down. Its numbers have dropped since 2021, with many sites either moving on or upgrading to modern Drupal versions 8 through 11. This shift marks a long-overdue transition. Since Drupal 8 launched in 2016, adoption of modern versions has steadily increased by 5–10% each year. That shows a community not just surviving but actively moving forward.
Sebastien also notes that Drupal outpaces Adobe Experience Manager among top-tier sites, with double the adoption in the top 10,000. For a CMS that’s often underestimated, that’s a strong position. His takeaway: Drupal remains a serious contender for large-scale, high-impact web projects and its future looks far from uncertain.
