Drupal Association Opens Survey on Site Templates Marketplace Governance

Drupal Association Seeks Feedback on Site Templates Marketplace Governance

The Drupal Association is inviting community feedback to help define how a future Drupal Site Templates Marketplaceshould operate. Through a newly launched survey, the Association is seeking input on governance structure, quality control mechanisms, contributor recognition, licensing models, and revenue-sharing strategies.

The survey includes questions on:

  • Governance: How important is it that the marketplace is run by the Drupal Association and hosted on Drupal.org?
  • Quality: What would build trust in a listed template — community reviews, DA approval, compatibility checks, or contributor reputation?
  • Monetization: Which revenue models are acceptable — paid templates, referral fees, premium support options, or featured listings?
  • Contributor Incentives: Should contributors be allowed to offer paid updates or support? Should they be promoted for their contributions?
  • Licensing: Preferences around open-source licensing versus commercial or mixed-license templates.

Participants are also asked what they expect from paid templates — including support, documentation, security assurances, or customization rights.

While the LinkedIn announcement simply invited participation, the survey itself goes into significant detail about operational and ethical considerations for the marketplace's future.

Respondents can also opt in for future discussions, including virtual roundtables.
