Drupal Association Proposes International Federation to Unite Global Communities

The Drupal Association’s Board of Directors is exploring the formation of an International Drupal Federation to strengthen support for the Drupal project and its global communities. This new initiative, created and maintained by Tim Doyle, aims to establish a membership-based nonprofit that coordinates with, but does not replace, existing regional Drupal associations.

The proposed federation would give equal voice and legal recognition to member organizations worldwide. It seeks to eliminate dependency on any one legal system, collectively steward core assets like Drupal.org and DrupalCons, and attract global philanthropic and community-based funding. The federation would also provide a neutral legal home for Drupal’s global infrastructure.

A dedicated International Federation Working Group (IFWG) has been formed to evaluate the creation and structure of this nonprofit alliance. The group is inviting participation from regional Drupal associations interested in shaping the initiative. Contact Joi Garrett at [email protected] to express interest.

To facilitate understanding and involvement, three informational webinars will be held on 28 May 2025 at 3:00 UTC, 13:00 UTC, and 19:00 UTC. Attending one session is sufficient. IFWG meetings are scheduled to begin in early June 2025.

Global Discussion on Future of Drupal Governance

A federation in this context refers to a collaborative network of legally independent Drupal organizations that align under shared governance while maintaining control over local operations. This structure promotes collective decision-making and resource-sharing on a global scale.
