Drupal Core Names Cristina Chumillas and Emma Horrell as First UX Managers

Drupal Core has taken a significant step to prioritize user experience by introducing a dedicated UX Manager role within its core leads team. This strategic move aims to ensure UX is integral to the development process from the earliest stages rather than being treated as an afterthought.

Previously, UX responsibilities were scattered across various roles, typically under product management. As a result, UX input often arrived late in the cycle, focusing on minor usability fixes rather than influencing the overall user journey.

The new UX Manager role changes that dynamic. It guarantees UX representation during feature planning, design decisions, and development, paving the way for more intuitive, cohesive, and accessible experiences across the platform. The role will also support the growth of the design contributor community, establish a consistent UX testing process, and ease onboarding for designers and researchers.

Emma Horrell and Cristina Chumillas will co-lead the role. Emma, the UX Research Lead for Drupal CMS, brings extensive experience in user research and usability testing. Cristina, longtime usability topic maintainer and current Product Design Lead for Drupal CMS, also serves as the Front-end Framework Manager.

UX as a first class citizen in Drupal core

This marks the beginning of a broader UX initiative. Designers and researchers interested in contributing can join the #ux-working-group on Drupal Slack.
