TDT's Chinju Prakash Wins Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award for Translation

The Drop Times Social Media Manager Earns Literary Acclaim
Chinju Prakash Clinches Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award 2024 for Translation

The DropTimes is extremely delighted to celebrate an exceptional achievement within our close-knit team. Our social media manager, Mrs Chinju Prakash, has been honoured with the prestigious Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award for 2024 in Translation for her Malayalam rendition of Gioconda Belli’s autobiography, എന്റെ രാജ്യം, എന്റെ ശരീരം (El país bajo mi piel: The Country Under My Skin). Belli’s memoir, originally penned in Spanish and later translated into English, chronicles her journey as both poet and revolutionary amid the Nicaraguan struggle and was a finalist for the Los Angeles Times Book Prize in 2003.

Chinju’s achievement is a testament to her exceptional skill and dedication. Gioconda Belli belonged to the bourgeoisie, and her career as a renowned poet provided the façade that allowed her to function secretly as a rebel. Chinju wears no disguise; her serene, composed exterior belies the fierce precision she brings to Malayalam. In faithfully rendering Belli’s lyricism, emotional depth and cultural nuances, she has preserved not just the story but the very spirit of the original.

Salman Rushdie praised the memoir as “A passionate, lyrical, tough-minded account of an extraordinary life in art, revolution, and love. It’s a book to relish, to read and reread.” Malayali readers now have the privilege of encountering this extraordinary life in their own tongue thanks to Chinju’s meticulous translation, which transcends literal accuracy to capture every surge of Belli’s conviction and poetry.

This award not only recognises Chinju’s remarkable talent but also her commitment to elevating world literature for Malayalam readers. We are truly proud to work alongside such a remarkable talent and celebrate her success as part of The DropTimes family.

Congratulations Chinju!!!
