Gemini Provider 1.0.1-rc1 Brings Multimodal Gemini Features to Drupal AI Ecosystem

A release candidate for the Gemini Provider module introduces expanded Google Gemini capabilities to Drupal’s AI module ecosystem. Version 1.0.1-rc1 adds multimodal support including image generation, speech processing, structured responses, and tool-calling features ahead of the project’s first stable 1.0 release.

Drupal contributor Giorgi Jibladze, CTO and partner at Omedia, announced the release candidate and invited developers to test the update. The module is maintained by Jibladze together with Lekso Surameli, a Drupal developer at Omedia, and the Drupal.org project page lists Omedia as a supporting organisation. The module acts as a provider for the Drupal AI module, allowing sites to access Google’s Gemini models through Drupal’s pluggable AI provider architecture.

New features in the release include text-to-image generation using native Gemini image models, text-to-speech with configurable voices, speech-to-text transcription, structured output through JSON schema responses, and tools or function-calling support. The module also introduces token usage tracking across operations and improved declarations of supported provider and model capabilities.

Several updates align the module with Google’s current Gemini model lineup. Default chat models were updated from gemini-1.5-pro to gemini-2.5-flash, while the default embedding model now uses gemini-embedding-001. The release also adds an isUsable() check in getConfiguredModels() to improve error handling and prevent white-screen failures after enabling the module.

Bug fixes in the release resolve PHPStan errors in iterator and chat methods and widen the Drush constraint to support PHP 8.1 continuous integration. The project also introduces unit tests for JSON schema to Gemini schema conversion and kernel tests covering plugin discovery and related functionality.
