CKEditor AI Integrates Into Drupal With Premium Features Module 1.8.0
CKEditor 5 Premium Features module version 1.8.0 introduces CKEditor AI to Drupal, embedding AI-assisted writing, editing, and translation tools directly within the rich text editor.
The update was released on 12 March 2026 and integrates AI assistance into the editing interface, removing the need to switch between external tools and the editor. Authors can generate, refine, and transform content within the same workspace, reflecting a shift toward in-context content workflows.
The CKEditor AI feature set includes four primary capabilities. An AI Chat interface enables multi-turn interactions for brainstorming and drafting, with the ability to insert generated content directly into the editor. AI Review provides inline suggestions for grammar, tone, clarity, and style, with configurable rules aligned to editorial standards.
AI Translate supports translation across ten languages, with a dedicated interface for reviewing and managing outputs. AI Quick Actions enable one-click transformations such as rewriting, summarising, expanding, or adjusting tone on selected text.
All AI-generated outputs remain under user control and must be explicitly accepted before being applied. The system supports multiple model providers, including OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google, and allows integrators to define access rules. Deployment options include on-premises configurations, supporting data control and compliance requirements.
The release aligns with broader developments in Drupal’s AI ecosystem. While recent Drupal AI updates have introduced platform-level capabilities such as content field actions, chatbots, guardrails, and observability, CKEditor AI operates at the editor level, focusing on in-context content creation.
Version 1.8.0 also introduces a new Cloud Services module that consolidates shared functionality used by features connecting to CKEditor cloud or self-hosted services. The Channel entity, previously part of the Real-time Collaboration module, has been migrated into the new module and is now used by CKEditor AI.
After upgrading, site maintainers must run database update scripts to enable the Cloud Services module and ensure the Channel entity is correctly registered. The migration process does not affect existing stored data related to channel identifiers.
The release includes targeted fixes across collaboration and editing features. Comments now display in sidebar mode during fullscreen editing. Adjustments to Footnotes and Line Height ensure toolbar elements are removed when modules are uninstalled. Issues affecting email editing and merge field workflows during Track Changes Preview have also been resolved.
While a separate bug fix release for the CKEditor 5 Plugin Pack module was issued in February 2026, version 1.8.0 focuses on expanding capabilities within the Premium Features module. CKEditor AI is available across Essential, Professional, and Custom plans, and trial access is available for evaluation.
