Display Builder Beta 6 Brings UX Refresh and Drupal 11.4 Fixes

Released on 6 August 2026, Display Builder 1.0.0-beta6 brings a redesigned builder interface, preview changes, and Drupal 11.4 compatibility fixes. The release works with Drupal ^11.4 and records 20 resolved issues, including the UX refresh demonstrated during UI Suite Monthly #37, responsive viewport work, an instances list panel, and fixes carried forward after problems with Beta 5.

One of those problems had created a practical reason for another beta. A Drupal.org issue opened on 26 July reported that 1.0.0-beta5 could not be enabled on a fresh Drupal 11.4.4 installation because of a duplicate SourceValueItem::isEmpty() declaration in ui_patterns_field. The fix was committed to the development branch, and the issue was closed when Beta 6 was released. The new beta also includes additional Drupal 11.4 compatibility work and raises its Drupal requirement from Beta 5’s ^11.3.3 to ^11.4.

The interface work had been previewed at UI Suite Monthly #37 on 23 July. Jean Valverde (mogtofu33), Display Builder’s lead technical maintainer, demonstrated revised drag-and-drop behaviour, a navigator tree for reordering components and placing them into slots, floating controls tied to individual view panes, a pinned toolbar, a minimal rich-text editing interface, and reduced refresh work for hidden panels. The UX refresh issue was reviewed, committed, and marked fixed on 24 July, and the work is included in the Beta 6 changelog.

Beta 6 follows a more architectural change introduced by Beta 5 on 26 June. That release moved Display Builder’s history management onto Drupal entity revisions and separated publishing logic from state handling. During the July meeting, Jean described translation, accessibility, and interface refinement as the principal work remaining before a release candidate. Beta 6 includes a Simplified Chinese translation file, but the broader symmetric translation work remains open, alongside accessibility work tracked in the project’s issue queue.

The meeting also supplied an implementation example from a website being developed for the Lattara archaeological site and museum near Montpellier. Drupal contributor Felip Manyer i Ballester said the unpublished project uses Display Builder primarily with entity view displays, Paragraph-based components, and some Views integration. At the time of the presentation, the project remained on Beta 4 after encountering problems while attempting to move to Beta 5.

Felip also reported that a front-end developer without previous Drupal experience adapted to the project’s component workflow, including declaring components in YAML for reuse across displays. That account is an implementation example rather than measured usability evidence, and it predates Beta 6. The Lattara site is expected to launch before the end of 2026, according to the presentation.

Two related considerations for teams evaluating Display Builder were also discussed in UI Suite Monthly #37. Compatibility with Drupal Canvas remains unresolved: the UI Suite team said its work around the component plugin manager, JSON Schema references, and core stream-wrapper integration is complete, while corresponding changes are still required on the Canvas side. The meeting also covered recent UI Patterns security work. 2.0.17, released on 8 July 2026, fixed a moderately critical cross-site scripting vulnerability and changed how strings containing markup are handled; 2.0.18 followed on 17 July with further fixes, including render-time escaping through Twig. Neither point changes Beta 6’s release focus, but both affect the wider component stack in which Display Builder is being evaluated.

Drupal.org now lists Beta 6 as Display Builder’s latest tagged release, while noting that the project still has no supported stable release. The maintainers have not announced a release date for a release candidate. The UI Suite initiative plans to skip its August monthly meeting and return with UI Suite Monthly #38 on 17 September 2026.
