Dries Buytaert and His First Web3 Webpage

Dries Buytaert

Dries Buytaert, in his blog, wrote about how he built and published his first web page using web3 technologies. He gives a step-by-step explanation about uploading an InterPlanetary File System (IPFS), making it available at dries.eth using Ethereum Name Service (ENS), and visiting it with a web3 enabled browser.

The first step is buying an ENS domain name. Here he explains that an ENS is an open-source blockchain-based naming protocol, making it a DNS for web3. He adds that ENS isn’t just a service for Ethereum; it is also a general-purpose web3 service built on Ethereum using smart contracts. He also explains how the ENS domain is used to receive cryptocurrencies.

Dries also explains how the .eth domain is a Non-Fungible Token (NFT), and one can buy or sell these domain names at NFT marketplace like OpenSea.

The second step is Uploading an HTML file to IPFS, an open-source protocol and peer-to-peer network for sharing and storing data. Dries talks about IPFS being replicated across hundreds of IPFS nodes around the world and how in theory, it is more resilient than traditional website hosting.

In this step, Dries Buytaert also talks about Filecoin, a blockchain-based cryptocurrency token that, like IPFS, is an open-source protocol. Through this step, he explains that to host his website on IPFS, he needed one IPFS node willing to host the content; For which he could either run his own node or pay a third-party IPFS service to host his content.

The third step is visiting your web3 webpage. Dries talks about using an IPFS-compatible browser like Brave to access content hosted on IPFS.

The fourth and final step is mapping your webpage to your domain name. As you cannot use the hexadecimal hash that you get after uploading your file to IPFS to share your website, you will use an ENS. In this step, he goes into the details of creating and using an ENS.

Further, he discusses the prospects of ENS and IPFS. He talks about the shortcomings like cost, working only with static sites, speed, and lack of browser support. He also talks about the positive aspects of ENS and IPFS like open-source, permissionless, and programmable services and potential uses. Dries the founder of Drupal also talks in detail what web3 means for developers and the benefits of using it.
